EL Etiopiassa

Pääsiäistä on täällä vietetty korkealla profiililla, viikkoa myöhemmin kuin Euroopassa. Kaksi kuukautta paastonneet ortodoksit suunnittelivat pari viikkoa ennakkoon niitä notkuvia ruokapöytiä, joiden äärellä nyt on nautiskeltu. Meidän pihalla odotti pari päivää lahtaamista kolme lammasta ja yksi kukko, jotka määkivät ja kiekuivat siinä odotusajan säännöllisen tauotta. Pääsiäisaamuna niille koitti kohtalon hetki. Onneksi en joutunut todistamaan varsinaista h-hetkea, vain jalkikäsittelyä.

Easter has been celebrated with high profile here, a week later than the European. The orthodox who have bee fasting for two months have been planning for two weeks in advance the overwhelming dining tables that have now been enjoyed. In our compound there were three sheep and a rooster for two days waiting for to be slaughtered – and regularly expressing themselves noisily. In Easter morning they met their fate. Luckily I didn’t happen to witness the event, only afterwards the results.

Doro wat eli useita tunteja kypsytetty mausteinen kanasoosi on pääsiäisen ehdoton ykkönen, jonka taitaminen on perinteisesti ollut naimisiinpääsyn ehtoina nuorille naisille. Sen perässä tulevat sitten muut lihat eli lammas ja nauta, jota syödään mielellään raakana.
Ennen tätä herkuttelua kuitenkin kaupunki on valkoisenaan kirkkokansaa, joka vaeltaa kirkkoihin ja niiden ympärille tunnustamaan paastonajan syntejään.

Doro wat – several hours cooked spicy chicken sauce – is number one of the Easter dishes, and the skill to make it has traditionally been a prerequisite for marriage for girls. After that come other kinds of meat like lamb and beef, which is often preferred raw.
Before this eating celebration the city is full of people dressed in white traditional clothes rushing to churches and church yards to confess their syns during the fasting time.

Vaikka syksy täällä etenee, säätila on edelleen lämmin, lämpötila lähentelee päivisin usein 30 astetta. Se on epätavallista, normaalisti keikutaan tähän aikaan 20 asteen korvissa. Ilmastonmuutos näkyy täälläkin odottamattomina ilmiöinä. Rankkojen sateiden odotetaan alkavan kesäkuussa, mutta kukapa tietää…
Ajatuksissani assosiaatioketjuun liittyy ilmastonmuutoksen kaltaisena ilmiönä köyhyys – myös sillä on globaalit kytkennät. Mitä köyhempää, sitä lyhytnäköisempää ihmisten toiminta on, koska tärkeää on turvata jokapäiväinen hengissäpysyminen. Esimerkkinä vaikkapa puiden hakkaaminen polttopuiksi ja sitä kautta monessa mielessä arvokkaiden metsien tuhoutuminen. Hienoja avaria maisemiahan siitä kyllä saadaan turistien (sitten kun niitä tänne saadaan) ihailtaviksi…
En ole moneen viikkoon antanut yhdellekään kerjäläiselle mitään. Antaminen tuntuu niin järjettömältä – vaikka antamatta jättäminenkään ei tunnu hyvältä, inhimillisen kohtaamisen mielessä. Kun asiaa katsoo täältä käsin, vakuuttuu siitä, että kyllä se vanha kunnon koulutus taitaa olla kuitenkin kestävin keino minkään muutoksen aikaansaamiseksi. Ja millaisen muutoksen – siitä meillä eurooppalaisilla ja muilla sivistyneillä on tietysti vankat omat totuutemme.

Though the autumn is proceeding here, the weather is still very warm the temperature coming near to 30 Celsius often in daytime. It is unusual, normally the temperature is around 20 at this time. The climate change can be seen also here as unpredictable phenomena. The heavy rains are expected to start in the beginning of June, but who knows…
In my thoughts the next part of the associative chain is poverty with it’s equally global connections. The poorer the community the shorter perspective of the results of actions , because the first priority in an individual’s life is to assure every day survival. As an example the cutting of trees as a source for burning wood and through that the destroying of forests. Beautiful vast sceneries for tourists to admire (when tey ever get here), for sure…
I have not been giving a coin for the beggars for several weeks. Giving seems so senseless – though not giving does not feel good either, in a human encounter respect. When you look at the situation from here, it seems abvious thet the most sustainable way to make any kind of change is good old education. And what kind of change – of that we, the representatives of the civilized world , have pretty solid truths.

Lähetin mieheni kotiin ja palasin normaalin elämään. Takana on 10 päivää enemmän tai vähemmän lomailua, yhdessäoloa, rentoutumista. Mukavaa ja tarpeellista, monessa mielessä.

I sent my husband home and returned to normal life. We spent 10 days more or less on holiday, being together and relaxing. Nice and necessary, in many respects.

Addiksessa kolusimme parhaat museot (kansallinen ja etnografinen), Merkaton, olimme vieraina kahviseremoniassa köyhässä korttelissa, kävelimme nuuhkimassa pölyn ja dieselin katkua, söimme injeraa kansantanssin äärellä Yod Abessiniassa ja Habeshassa (ravintoloita). Ja tietysti: tapasimme Haile Gebreselassien toimistossaan. Mukava heppu, vaikka kiireinen bisnesmies. Alla todiste.

In Addis we went through the best museums (National and Ethnographic), Merkato, participated a coffee seremony in a poor peoples’ quarter, walked aroud smelling the dust and diesel, ate injera with traditional dance in Yod Abyssinia and Habesha restaurants. And of course: we met Hale Gebreselassie in his office. Nice guy, though a busy businessman. Evidence below.

Pakenimme Addiksen hässäkästä neljäksi päiväksi etelän reissulle hautavajoamajärville, siis Langanoon ja Hawassaan. Langano on maan suosituimpia lomailukohteita (vaikka lomamatkailu ei täällä sangen tavallista tunnukaan olevan), ja maineensa ansainnut jos kaipaa rauhallista oleilua miellyttävässä ilmastossa ja luonnonkauniissa ympäristössä. Me kaivattiin. Hotelli oli ehkä parhaat päivänsä nähnyt, mutta siisti ja perustarpeisiin vastaava. Tähän aikaan vuodesta ei ole sesonki, joten saimme olla ihanasti rauhassa. Langanon lähellä on kaksi muuta järveä, Shalla ja Abyatta, joilta voi bongata runsaasti flamingoja ja kuulemma myös pelikaaneja. Myös strutseja nähtiin ympäröivässä luonnonpuistossa . Järvilaakson ilmasto on selvästi Addiksen ylänköä lämpimämpi, vaikka tähän aikaan vuodesta pääsimme nauttimaan myös lähes päivittäisistä pikkusateista.

We fled from Addis for four days to Rift Valley Lakes, that is to Langano and Hawassa. Langano is one of the most popular tourist spots (although holiday travelling seems not very common here), and worth it’s reputation if you miss peaceful lingering in a comfortable climate and beautiful surroundings . We did. The hotel might have passed by it’s days of glory, but was clean and met the basic needs. Ths time of the year is not the high season, so we had a wonderful peace there. Near Langano there are two other lakes, Shalla and Abyatta, where you can see lots of flamingos and also, we heard, pelicans. We met also ostriches in the nature park around the lakes. The Rift Valley climate is clearly warmer that the highland of Addis, though this time of the year we also got to enjoy the small rains daily.

Kaksi viimeistä päivää reissusta käytimme Hawassassa ja sen lähellä olevissa Sashemenessa ja Wando Gennetissä. Sashemenessa asuu Haile Selassien lahjoittamalla maa-alueella rastafariyhteisö, joka normaalin elämän lisäksi pitää yllä pariakin museota, kirkkoa ja koko paikkakunnan koulua. Meille tarjottiin vieraanvaraisesti myös kannabista, jonka käyttö alueella on sallittua, tosin kieltäydyimme kohteliaasti.
Wando Gennetissä on kuumien lähteiden ympärillä paratiisimainen kylpylä, jossa lilluimme hetken aikaa, sateessa.
Näiltä seuduilta lähtien kohti etelää alkaa maisema muuttua selvästi trooppisemmaksi – vihreäksi ja kosteammaksi. Maanviljely kukoistaa täällä, tuottoisimmat viljelykasvit ovat kahvi ja khat, tuo lehdistä pureskeltava mieto, täällä laillinen huume.

Two last days of the trip we spent in Hawassa and the smaller places near by, Sashemene and Wando Gennet. In Sashemene there is a rastafari community inhabiting a land area given by Haile Selassie himself. In addition to normal life they keep up two museums, a church and a school for the whole community. We were hospitably offered to smoke cannabis, but we politely refused.
In Wando Gennet there is a paradiselike spa around the hot springs , where we spent some lazy hours, in rain.
From these surroundings on towards the south the scenery changes clearly to be more tropical – green and humid. Agriculture flourishes here the most productive plants being coffee and qat, the chewable mild narcotic, which is legal here.

Jos asuisin tässä maassa kauemmin, Hawassa olisi varteenotettava asuinpaikka. Kaupunki on avara, vihreä, rauhallinen, puhdas, ja järven rannalla. Järvi tuotti meille virtahepoelämyksen ja kalatorikokemuksen, muistiinpainuvia molemmat. Ja valtava määrä marabuhaikaroita!

If I were to live a longer time in this country, Hawassa would definately be one of my serious options to live in. The town is green, clean, peaceful and by the lake. The lake gave us the memorable experiences of hippos and fish market. And a tremendeous amount of marabous!

Jakaminen on maailman tärkein asia, eikös se niin ollut… Siksi oli hyvä tehdä tämä matka kahden. Ehkä siinä tuli jaettua muutakin tärkeää, pitkästä aikaa.
Olihan meillä toki kuskikin ja nelivetoauto, joita myös on kiittäminen matkan onnistumisesta. Oli aika monta kohtaa tiellä, joista ei meidän Volvolla olisi päässyt mihinkään.

Sharing is the most important thing in the world, isn’t it… So it was good to make the trip the two of us together. Some other important things where shared at the same time, I guess.
We also had a driver and a 4 wheel drive car that helped to make our trip a success. There where pretty many spots on the road where we couldn’t manage with our small Volvo.

Olen ollut tällä nyt 12 viikkoa, toiset 12 vielä edessä. Ja ne viikot tulevat olemaan lyhyempiä kuin edelliset, uskon.

I have been here now for 12 weeks, another 12 to go. And those weeks will certainly be shorter than the previous ones.

Huomenna saan vieraan: mieheni tulee kaymaan reiluksi viikoksi. Enpa ole varmaan koskaan odottanut hanta yhta paljon. Tanaan pestasin ensimmaista kertaa kotihengettaren siivoamaan ja pesemaan pyykkia. Sehan on yleensa taalla arkipaivaa vahankaan vauraammissa tai edes keskituloisissa perheissa.

I am getting a visitor tomorrow: my husband is coming for more than a week. I think I have never waited more for seeing him than now. Today I hired for the first time a housemaid to clean and do the laundry for me. That is every day practice here in wealthy or even lower middle class families.

Viime viikolla murehdin kotiasioita Suomessa ja se myos nakyi miinusta toissa. Siitapa sukeutui mielenkiintoisia keskusteluja. Paikalliset tyokaverini sanoivat, etta he ovat luulleet, etteivat eurooppalaiset juuri valita huolehtia perheenjasenistaan tai sukulaisistaan. Tulin kyseenalaistaneeksi tuota luuloa ja sain paljon huolehtivaisuutta ja myotatuntoa osakseni.

Last week I had worries about home issues back home and it also showed at work. Intresting conversations came about. My Ethiopian collegues said that they thought Europians don’t care so much about their family members’ and relatives’ wellfare. So I came to question those thoughts and also got lots of empathy and caretaking.

Loppuviikolla lahdemme Kimmon kanssa rentouttavalle retkelle Rift Valleyn jarville, odotan ihan into piukkana!

At the end of the week we are going to travel to the Rift Valley Lakes with Kimmo. I can hardly wait!
